Special Concentration Programs
Bachelor in Renewable Energy
The training in this program will focus on the dire need of Somali society specifically and the region generally to reduce the highly costly reliance on imported fuel, the desertification of the land by cutting and burning trees for charcoal, and lack of skills to wisely use existing natural resources of the environment, like abundantly available solar and wind energy year round. The training will include theoretical study and practical, field experience.
Bachelor in Well-Drilling & Water Conservation
This program trains students in the drilling of affordable wells for water and conservation of above-surface water after rainfall and rivers which drain into the sea followed by long droughts which every two or three years are so intense that most livestock die, communities haul with water tankers at high cost water from distance locations if they can afford, and often experience aggravated sanitation and poor health. This training program prepares graduates to find solution for this pervasive problem of water shortage and therefore living challenges of communities, , making clean and adequate water accessible and affordable, particularly to poor and rural communities.
Bachelor in Entrepreneurship
Successive wars before and after the collapse of the military regime 1991 forced mass dislocation, displacement, and dependence on foreign aid for basic necessities like food, shelter, and health services. Generations born after the collapse of the regime, today constituting at least 70% of the population, lived mostly under these conditions despair and dependence. The entrepreneurial spirit for which Somalis were historically reduced in these decades of war and displacement, replaced by dependence on foreign aid and fledgling or weak governments intensifying competition and conflicts over limited resources. Genuine development does not take place without contribution of entrepreneurs. The Bachelor in Entrepreneurship Program, bolstered by the Center for Entrepreneurship describe later, provides the necessary training and skills to advance the rewards of personal initiative and innovation in the marketplace.
Bachelor in Culture & Epistemology
Epistemology is a branch of philosophy that examines the origin, nature, method, and limits of knowledge. Too often, ideas and practice of professions to 'developing countries are inappropriately and uncritically applied to non-European populations. Academic and professional training without understanding the underlying cultural and epistemological foundation of knowledge or technical skills produces only technicians without historical perspective and without critical thinking, absence of either limiting relevance to context and creative problem-solution. The Bachelor in Culture & Epistemology produces students versed in the underlying history, outlook, meaning, and cultural legacies of their specialization. Students majoring in culture and epistemology may focus on the underlying meaning and outlook distilled from the rich tradition of Somali poetry and culture. Others may take this as double major, studying for this degree along with any another discipline of their choice.
Duration & Requirements of the Above Programs
The duration of the abpve programs is 4 years. The requirements for enrollment are completion of secondary education or its equivalent, passing FFU entrance examination, and two recommendations. Double majors are required to complete prerequisite courses and write a thesis on Somali poetry & Culture.
